I have always been excited by the rumble and fury, the unknown destination. As a child I would stand by the tracks and court disaster–trying to flatten a small object like a penny. Even now that I am older, if I hear the whistle I search out the engine. They have never lost their fascination.
I suppose blog trains are slightly different. Certainly they are easier to board and more comfortable. I enjoy the imagery of watching the country pass by outside the window while the constant clack of the tracks resounds beneath your feet. there is always something exciting about a train ride! It carries the air of vacation, the promise of new!
Trains are almost a thing of the past today. Sleeper and dining cars almost non-existent. It pains me to think that they only make excursions now to foster the fantasies of a bygone era. People are in a hurry to get from point A to point B. I have no objection to speed and I understand the necessity… I just know in my heart that the journey is often more important than the arrival.
Take from that statement what you will. Do you like trains? Do you like to walk? Happy journeys to you all!

Sacramento is big with the train folk. We have a very important train museum here and many train related destinations. If you ever get the chance to take the Skunk train through the redwoods, do it! Fabulous train trip!
I love trains. When/if I get to travel again, I’ll be headed to the skunk!
That picture you have up there reminds me of the old TV show “The Wild, Wild West” Part of the charm of the show was the train.
🙂 I love trains!
I have loved trains since I was a little girl. I grew up not far from train tracks and we did the penny flattening, too! There is nothing like the sound of a train whistle in the distance – to me, it’s never sounded lonely, only inviting.
Great post, Patrick!
thanks Martha! I still have a penny from back then!
Love trains. Used to travel up and down the California coast overnight as a child.
Sure wish there were more still running!
We’re a freight train hub here in Spokaloo. There’s always one rumbling by. The difficulty with the passenger train industry is that they have to use the privately owned freight train tracks. Which gives poor government-subsized Amtrak difficulties.
Guess that’s true. I love a good train adventure!
Amtrak rocks! I love taking the train. I’m not sure where you live, but we have at least one in America that works getting you to where you want to go. There are some hobbyists that have a miniature train that runs through a wooded park where I live. They take the kids (and adults) for a ride every other Saturday in the summer and they do have a couple of steam engines.
I love trains too!
